Cedar Rapids RoughRiders defenseman Doug Leaverton has committed to Colorado College for this fall, the United States Hockey League team announced recently and confirmed by Leaverton on Tuesday.
“I’m really excited about coming to Colorado Springs,” he said. “I played in a tournament there when I was 13 or 14 and loved the mountains. Once I found out the kind of hockey program they have there, it became a top-5 choice for me.”
Leaverton, 20, scored one goal and totaled four points in 52 games (plus/minus + 7) last season. In two seasons, the Painesville, Ohio native collected seven points in 72 games (+19).
Leaverton (6 feet, 4 inches, 225 pounds) could join RoughRiders teammate Scott Winkler at Colorado College. Leaverton must be accepted into Colorado College and sign a national letter of intent before coach Tigers coach Scott Owens may comment.
Leaverton said he has sent in his application and plans to be on hand for freshman orientation Aug. 22.
