Fourth lines, power play units come up huge in CC win
Both power–play units scored and the fourth line of freshman Andrew Hamburg, sophomore Nick Dineen and senior Brian McMillin was on the ice for the two 5-on-5 goals in the Tigers’ 4-3 win over Robert Morris Friday night at World Arena.
CC went up 1-0 on a goal by Dineen, his second as a Tiger, when he backhanded in a rebound off a slap shot by McMillin.
The play was set up by freshman defenseman Mike Boivin, who kept the puck from getting out of the zone and sent the rubber into the opposite corner where Dineen tracked it down, passing to senior defenseman Kris Fredheim who sent the puck out to McMillin on the point for his slapper.
“That line was plus-2,” coach Scott Owens said. “That line gave us a boost in the 5-on-5.”
Senior captain Mike Testwuide’s game-winning power play goal gave the nation’s No. 2 power play (31.7 percent coming into the weekend) a 2-for-5 night (40 percent).
“It came through,” Owens said. “But I want to give Robert Morris some credit. They had a good game plan and skated and played well. We couldn’t put them away.”
Which suggests Saturday’s game could be an exciting one as well.
Penalty shots aplenty
After Owens went 10-plus years without seeing a penalty shot in a college game he was involved in, he’s seen three in the past four games over the past three weeks.
“It’s going to be hard to match that,” Owens said, adding all three were legitimate penalty calls. “It’s discretionary.”
CC freshman goalie Joe Howe has stopped two while the Tigers were unable to score on its one chance.
Big-play knack, once again
Freshman Rylan Schwartz’s assist on Mike Testwuide’s power-play goal means he’s been involved in seven of CC’s eight game-winning scores this season. Sophomore Tim Hall got the second assist, giving him four assists on decisive goals.
