University of Denver coach George Gwozdecky made sure there was no bulletin board material from his weekly press conference Tuesday.
The coachof the second-ranked Pioneers (9-4-1, 7-2-1 league) praised the No. 5 Tigers (10-3-1, 7-2-1) as the teams prepare for a home-and-home series Friday (in Colorado Springs) and Saturday in Denver. He was hesitant to use the word surprising to describe the team his Pioneers are tied with for the Western Collegite Hockey Association lead.
“Surprise isn’t the right word to use for a team in this league because it is so competitive,” he told the Denver media. “They’ve been the most consistent since Day 1.”
Gwozdecky was still upset with the Pioneers after Saturday’s home loss to No. 20 St. Cloud State. He had just left Tuesday’s practice to attend the weekly conference.
“I just came off the ice trying to get across to them that what we saw Saturday night was unacceptable,” he said. “We have to have some good practices and get in the right frame of mind. It’s up to me and the other coaches to get these guys prepared.”
Sounds like George is feeling the pressure of all those high expectations that DU has this year.
