ST. CLOUD, Minn. — A milestone win for Colorado College coach Scott Owens proved to be a memorable one for all the right reasons.

The Tigers alumnus recorded win No. 250 behind the CC bench as No. 6 Colorado College cruised to a 4-1 win Saturday night at St. Cloud State.

“It’s been a good, consistent run,” said Owens (250-137-38). “It was a good win after last night. I’m proud of the way they answered.”

CC improved to 4-0-3 on the road and snapped a four-game winless skid (0-2-2). The Tigers also stayed in second place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association headed into the holiday break.

After a wild 4-4 tie Friday, the Tigers (11-4-3, 8-3-3) frustrated the potent Husky forwards. Most every time St. Cloud (8-7-3, 7-5-2) generated a rush, a Tiger had his stick blade in a passing lane to tip away the puck.

“They kept a third guy back and stayed on top of the puck,” Huskies coach Bob Motzko said. “They came in and played an excellent game.”

That and goalie Joe Howe’s 18 saves kept the 6,053 fans at the National Hockey Center pretty quiet.

“We talked about it in pre-game,” said senior captain Mike Testwuide. “They’re really skilled and make good passes so we had to make sure to be in the passing lanes.”

Instead, it was the CC forwards who found the space needed.

Freshman Andrew Hamburg scored 46 seconds into the game. He followed that up with an assist to Testwuide with 18:38 left in the second for the eventual game-winner.

The second included the fifth penalty shot CC has been involved in this season (three against) Brian Volpei beat Howe, but his shot went between the goalie’s legs and wide of the net with 5:34 left.

The combination of Volpei’s miss and a goal by CC’s Matt Overman with 12.2 seconds left in the second made it 4-1. CC killed off a 5-on-3 power play in the third to clinch the win.
