A weekend sweep of two top Atlantic Hockey Association teams, Air Force and Mercyhurst, pushed Colorado College up one spot to No. 9 in both the USA Today/USA Hockey and U.S. College Hockey Online polls announced Monday.

A Western Collegiate Hockey Association series split by Minnesota-Duluth at last-place Michigan Tech opened things up ahead of the Tigers (17-10-3, 11-8-3 WCHA).

Third-place Denver (18-6-4, 12-4-4) remained at No.2 ahead of Wisconsin (16-7-4, 11-6-3) and No. 4 St. Cloud State (18-8-4, 13-6-3).

Duluth (18-11-1, 14-7-1), tied for first with St. Cloud, is No. 7 in the USA Hockey poll and No. 8 in USCHO, switching spots with Cornell (No. 8 USA Hockey; No. 7 USCHO) in each ranking.

CC, rated ninth in both, is tied for fourth with Wisconsin in the league.

Boston College rounds out the top 10 followed by sixth-place North Dakota (13-10-5, 8-9-3) at No. 11.

CC’s next opponent, seventh-place Minnesota (13-13-2, 8-10-2) Feb. 19-20, picked up a single vote in the USCHO poll.

Miami remains No. 1 in both polls and in the PairWise rankings, which mimics the 16-team NCAA Tournament selection process. Denver, Wisconsin and St. Cloud follow with BC and Bemidji tied for fifth.

CC inched up to No. 7 after starting last weekend at No. 10. Maine is No. 8 followed by Duluth, North Dakota and Massachusetts in a tie for ninth. The rankings may change after Monday’s Beanpot Tournament final.

*Team’s RPI has been adjusted to remove negative effect from defeating weak opponent.

The PairWiseSM Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I men’s hockey tournament. The PWR compares the top 25 teams in the RPI Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), judging them by four criteria: record against common opponents, head-to-head competition, record against other top 25 teams if the team has faced at least 10 top 25 opponents, and the RPI.

For each comparison won, a team receives one point. The final PWR ranking is based on the number of points (comparisons) won against top 25 teams. Ties are settled by the RPI.

A more complete explanation of the workings of the PWR is also available in our FAQ. There is also a FAQ available explaining the NCAA Tournament selection process.

The PWR can be reformatted and redistributed by any media outlet or person, provided USCHO’s URL (http://www.uscho.com/) accompanies the results.

Note: A team’s record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which are eligible for the NCAA Tournament. In particular, only non-exhibition matchups between schools in the six major conferences count towards a team’s record as used in the RPI and PWR. Other games, including contests against Canadian schools and tournament-ineligible D-I programs, are not counted.
