Winkler could replace Boivin on top power-play unit

Scott Winkler might get his spot on Colorado College’s first power-play unit back from Mike Boivin (above) after a weekend in which the Tigers failed to score with the man advantage.

CC coach Scott Owens justified keeping Boivin in the top grouping for a 2-1 loss against Air Force that was followed by a 2-1 win over Union because Boivin had “such a good weekend” at Minnesota State-Mankato, marking a goal and an assist on the power play in a Dec. 16-17 sweep. Winkler missed the trip to join Norway at a tournament in Slovenia.

An 0-for-6 effort dropped CC’s power play to fifth in the country at 25.3 percent heading into the final nonconference series of the season this weekend for the No. 6 Tigers, who host No. 13 Cornell. Boivin opened the season on a top power-play unit that also consists of Nick Dineen, Gabe Guentzel and Jaden and Rylan Schwartz, and he has struck twice with the man advantage – as many times as Winkler. In short, it’s basically a tossup.

“We just stuck with Boivin” after Mankato, Owens said Tuesday. Yet he added, “We’ll re-evaluate that because we weren’t very thrilled with either of our power-play units.”

Just a thought. If Coach Owens wants to change the Power Play, what about keeping both Winkler (left side) and Boivin (right side) on the point, then he would have all his top 5 goal scorers out at the same time! Yes he would have 2 left shots and 3 right shots but that shouldn’t make a big difference.

Bob, that’s a pretty interesting idea. I hadn’t thought of that. I think Guentzel does a good job of stabilizing things on the point, but that would be one way to keep Winkler and Boivin on the ice. And how many teams have their top five point producers on the same power-play unit? Probably none. Could actually be something to consider.

I just have a hard time believing that a guy named “Scott Winkler” is Norwegian. Does anyone really think The Fonz on Happy Days (played by actor Henry Winkler) is Scandinavian in any way? That wouldn’t be “COOL”. Before CC lets Scott go to any more World Juniors games, they should first require that he change his name to Sven Fjordstrom or some other more identifiable Scandinavian name.
Skol to a great second half of the season!

  • Matt says:

Doesn’t CC lead the country in giving up shorthanded goals? I can’t find the stat anywhere. They are already ranked #5 on the power play, but not in the top 40 on the penalty kill. They should focus more on the PK. The power play rankings only look at goals. A power play ranking based on plus/minus would be interesting.

  • Brian Gomez says:

Matt, you are correct. CC is tied with Maine for the national lead in shorthanded goals allowed … each team has given up seven. And last season, CC also tied for the national lead in shorthanded goals allowed, giving up 11. It’s obviously an area of concern, and it’s something Scott Owens talked about this week during practice, stressing the importance of not taking too many chances on the power play and not putting yourself in a high-risk situation. For future reference, if you’re looking for any national statistics, visit this website: http://www.collegehockeystats.net/1112/national/d1m. For shorthanded goals allowed, scroll down a ways to the power play section, then there’s a category there that reads “SHA.”
