David Civitarese and Alexander Krushelnyski scored in the third period to force overtime, but No. 8 Colorado College couldn’t overcome a two-goal deficit Saturday in a 5-4 loss to St. Cloud State at World Arena.

ST. CLOUD STATE COACH BOB MOTZKO

On the victory: “Both teams struggled with defensive mistakes. … We made it interesting. We gave up two goals late, and I don’t know how we missed the open net late that would have clinched it. We won ugly, but we scratched out two points on the road. Two points on the road is huge for us. It’s going to a war every weekend during the second half.”

ST. CLOUD STATE CENTER JORDY CHRISTIAN

On the victory: “We had found ways to lose before. Tonight, we found a way to win. They had all the momentum going into OT. But we just turned to each other on the bench and said, ‘Let’s win this.’”

On his game-winning goal: “To get that goal in overtime is huge for a young team like us. It was a great pass play by Brooks (Bertsch) and I just whacked at it.”

Have the coaches thought about putting Rylan, Jaden and Scott back together, that was a great combo! Then put William back with Nick and Alex, I still have a lot of faith in William (I actually never understood why the coach’s changed them to begin with)!

I think CC are counting on Rylan and Jaden way too much when they have 7 players which are putting the puck in the net. You can’t have a championship team that counts on 2 or 3 players only, it has to be a full team effort! The coaches have to find a way to get all their top players to play with more confidence, they have the tools but they can’t be afraid to use them!

Hey Brian, I asked Scott Owens today about putting Scott Winkler back on the top line with Jaden and Rylan Schwartz, and it doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen, at least not right now. With five of the next six games on the road, he said he doesn’t want to mess too much with the lines, especially since the home team receives the last change, and Minnesota, Denver and Bemidji State are all tough venues to play in. Plus, he said, he likes the cohesiveness of the second line with Winkler joined by Nick Dineen and Alexander Krushelnyski, and I think that has been CC’s most consistent line lately. You could see Dakota Eveland replaced by Jeff Collett on that right wing spot on the top line, or maybe they give William Rapuzzi another chance there. If there are major changes to the lines this weekend, it will probably be to the third line or the fourth line, which always seems to juggle a bit anyway. I do agree that they need production beyond Jaden and Rylan, and I think you saw that with the play of the second line against St. Cloud State, but they definitely need something more out of their third and fourth lines.
